In a city without a winter, winter wear lives a strange life. It is worn hard for two or three weeks in Japan, Korea or Europe, then shut away for the rest of the year in a climate that rarely drops below 70% humidity. Most of the damage we see on coats and down jackets does not happen on the trip. It happens in the wardrobe afterwards.
Before You Fly
Take everything out at least two weeks before you travel. A coat that has been stored since last year often has a musty smell, a crushed collar or a faint mould bloom that you only notice when you unpack it somewhere cold.
Our standard turnaround is 4 working days, but the weeks before the year-end school holidays are our busiest of the year. Book early, or tell us your flight date when you drop off and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
After You Come Home: The Clean That Matters
Perspiration, body oil, food and city grime from the trip are exactly what mould feeds on. In a Singapore wardrobe they will yellow a collar and leave a smell that sets into the fibre within months. Have winter wear cleaned before it goes away, not the week before the next trip.
Down Jackets and Puffers
Down has to be cleaned and then dried completely so the clusters loft back up. Down that is put away even slightly damp clumps, flattens and smells. We match the method to the shell and the fill, and check the jacket is evenly dry before it comes back to you.
For storage, hang it or keep it loosely folded in a breathable bag. Vacuum bags save space, but months of compression flatten the down.
Wool Coats, Cashmere and Knits
Wool and cashmere shrink and felt in a home wash; dry cleaning keeps their shape and softness. Both humidity and moths are drawn to wool, so clean it before storage and keep it in a cotton garment bag with silica packs or cedar, never in the plastic it came back in.
Leather, Ski Wear and Boots
Leather and suede jackets go through our specialist leather service, which takes 10 to 14 days, so send them in early. Ski jackets, thermal pants and winter or ski boots can be cleaned too. Salt and slush marks on boots come out best when they are treated soon after the trip, before they dry into the material.
What Winter Wear Cleaning Costs
Winter coats are priced by length: $30 for waist length and $40 for below the waist, with kids' winter coats and windbreakers at $20. Winter and thermal pants are $25, winter or ski boots (non or part leather) $55, and leather jackets from $90.
Collection and delivery are free on orders from $40 — a long coat and a pair of thermal pants already covers it. Leave the bag at your door anywhere in Singapore, or drop in at any of our four outlets.
